bring me anything more than just some ego pats For me Medicine is very achievement oriented Like it should be I reckon I certainly want the goal to be a healthy whole and viable individual But my Just put pen to paper or fingers to keyboards MmmHmmm 8230 but as of a late afternoon run to the exchange to purchase a a digital recorder I now have the opportunity to put voice into memory Nice Now when the moment strikes me I just start rambling on It turns out in playback that I am actually speaking faster than I ever thought possible I actually glanced down and checked to see if it was on medical opinion regarding a sad diagnosis of a very young child over at Stop Screaming I 8217 m Driving I 8217 m not sure what to say What do you say to parents whose child looks well now but in the years to come will be wheelchair bound and eventually die of his condition What can you say In my short career as a pediatrician I 8217 ve seen thousands of sick kids most recover some don 8217 t And when they don 8217 t it 8217 s usually sudden and unexpected the leading cause of death in pediatrics is accidental The long drawn out illnesses are rare but it 8217 s these illnesses that seem to give the parents the most peace I 8217 m not saying it 8217 s easy or quick At first the pain and fury is blinding but it moves eventually to understanding I am humbled with the bravery and dignity that these children and their parents hold on to They plan for the short term and hope for the future They taught me that the most important thing what we all know and very few actually do is to strive just for the day to day and enjoy the moments as they unfold A few years ago I watched a little girl with a congenital disease die They knew since birth she 8217 d die at some time They 8217 d come to terms with it years before When she did die she was surrounded by her loved ones and it was a peaceful beautiful experience We should all be so lucky It might be too early to think of the worst case scenario but I believe if we can accept the very worst that could happen then we are free of the terror For now I would tell them to seek a second opinion live each day in the moment and be
