Unified technology Sametime Unified Telephony is priced by per user so it scales down as well as up Today in a conference call with IBM a brain trust of David Marshak Alistair Rennie Bruce Morse and Marisa Viveros provided an overview of Sametime Unified Telephony SUT The concept of Unified Telephony has been a long time in coming Every study I ve read cites significant advantages for integrating VOIP video messaging collaboration etc However until relatively recently it s been the sort of gee whiz technology that you see on The Jetsons and requires a single vendor solution No one wants a rip and replace solution and we are all tired of vendor lock in Bruce pointed out that with the 14 vendors who have already validated their telephony systems SUT is now supported on 75 of all installations More vendors are in the pipeline and nbsp because the SUT communication protocol is running as a ratified SIP the validation has been averaging one day to complete Clearly there is an advantage to running with open and published industry standards Allistair drew on the strength of being able to work well with what exists rather than re architecting onto a homogeneous stack from a single vendor He doesn t just mean the hardware pieces but also the messaging core SUT isn t only for companies with a strong IBM Lotus presence because it s been designed to mix well with different platforms that haven t been burdened by weaker collaboration capabilities It s a marked advantage for IBM that SUT has a more practical vision that integrates into existing equipment The occasion for the call was VoiceCon 2009 where a SUT demonstration was provided that was similar to the one premiered at Lotusphere 2009 I was at the Lotusphere presentation and the interplay between different phone devices Sametime and back end PBXs received welcome applause At VoiceCon IBM included an even larger variety of devices and telephony systems for their staged overview SUT will be released in July and it s going to deserve a close look Gartner has already recommended it for it s great potential But Gartner may also have been overly cautious about its lack of suitability for smaller Stephan Wissel s presentation on DXL at Lotusphere he and I had a frank talk over some trends and some possibilities for Lotus Notes and Domino should be the hands down winner of any county fair cook off But sometimes IBM is like a cook that could have a winning recipe if only a few small ingredients had been included Notes is so close to being able to make up some lost ground the ND8 5 client is user friendly and it runs as a full client on three operating systems Spice up IMAP throw in some MAPI and Lotus would have a completely different flavor Because I was an IBM Lotus Business Partner for many years and Stephan is a Lotus Technology and Productivity Advisor for IBM he and I could commiserate how difficult it has been for IBM to take competitive advantage of Domino Part of the problem could be that Domino is just a different sort of product from the standard portfolio offering for an IBM client representative to choose IBM s Systems and Technology Group STG know about how client reps want an easy sell and they create a conversation around their p and z series systems Dear IT manager look around and count boxes in your server room ah so many Have a look with one or two of our big machines you can kick all these boxes out and we also have the service people to do that for you This conversation is easy because the client rep is talking to the person she is most likely to have the best relationship the IT manager It doesn t hurt either that the result is very concrete and tangible Domino though has been on the defensive for a long time This has changed with ND8 x and there might be a renaissance for developers clients and administrators But a lot of business users still think of it as an historic product which competitors exploit So when an IBM sales rep tries to introduce Domino to a Microsoft Exchange shop the conversation is familiar but also out of sync Dear IT manager look around and count boxes in your server room ah so many Have a look with one or two of our big machines you can kick all these boxes out and we also have the service people to do that for you Hm you will however have to touch every desktop as well as retrain each user while changing a corporate mind set It s worth it though because the Notes 8 client is a truly collaborative platform The Lotus seller loves to have this conversation but you and I can see there will be a fundamental and dramatic disconnect between the product s capabilities and the customer s interest The client rep and the IT manager see it too Um I ll need to discuss this idea first with our users and they are so opinionated Don t count on anything The Domino conversation dies before it starts Incredibly there is new competition which has already jumped ahead of Domino in the conversation to win over Exchange clients How can this be IBM has been struggling in this terrain against Microsoft for over a decade Yet Cisco for one has aggressively began to elbow IBM out of the arena with their recent acquisition of PostPath Cisco has already figured out how to make the conversation easy Their secret Postpath includes MAPI and is a drop in replacement for Exchange Here s how Stephan and I imagine their conversation You have so much Cisco gear already just add a few more and get rid of all those patch cycles Your users won t notice since you don t even touch the desktops That s a simpler conversation With Cisco marketing power the slogan can be Let s kick out Exchange but still keep Outlook Why isn t this possible with Domino and Notes Why doesn t Domino support Outlook clients Or why can t a Notes client connect to Exchange The introduction to Lotus architecture to a Microsoft shop can just as easily begin on the client side as with the server The Open Source community has already taken advantage of the European Union s demands for Microsoft to publish their protocols The latest Linux releases can now read write locally stored Outlook PST files and connect to an Exchange server by MAPI Ubuntu 9 04 is a full MAPI client at zero cost Today Novell s SUSE can natively connect to either Exchange or Novell Groupwise Domino is being pushed out of the competition because it lacks a few protocols It needs to support the Microsoft messaging wire protocols that Outlook uses I ll leave it to your imagination how much the sales conversation will improve Administration nbsp IBM Lotus nbsp Management Interesting isn t it that there is this business versus consumer side to appreciating Lotus Notes as corporate email Talking about IMAP seems to be a touchstone for exposing the consumer content in any email platform especially for Lotus Notes In the world in which I work these facets of corporate and personal have softened from hard angles of either or into the curves of sometimes and always A large set of my clients want the security and stability of their corporate account as well as the ability to simultaneously access their personal accounts I m already seeing that the always on line connected lifestyle of the Netbook iPhone and Blackberry users has blurred their private and public lives Email is being reset from being a single point of identity e g frank123 yahoo com messaging system into centralized communication social networking and document management Right Everybody sees these trends but they are applied in such wild variety that it is difficult to make comparisons We might even get nostalgic for the days we could chart out our evaluations of Domino Exchange and Groupwise on a feature grid Now I have a Domino account with UltraLite RSS Twitnotes iCal integration with some Google calendars and Sametime And even though my account has also been IMAP enabled I don t consider myself among the digerati of messaging gurus There are some business models which have no demand for email personalization Three years ago I had a conversation with an IBM VP who was talking about how a segment of the Asia Pacific market was perfectly content with Lotus Notes 4 6 These customers were willing to continue paying support for a long ago retired release of Lotus Notes They had a business model which was completely isolated and had no need for integration with the outside world Only when they were told that IBM had unequivocally retired 4 6 were they willing to upgrade That is not my world I m being called to forward mail into other mail platforms that can enjoy simpler IMAP consolidation My users are global and represent many different business needs I m pretty confident that Lotus Domino is the strongest possible core on which to wrap the varied needs of the business models I experience But I don t get to tell them to tough it out on the weak sides of Lotus Notes A growing number of my users need a good IMAP client and it s either going to be their own Notes or it s going to be something else If your users don t need this capability then you might be lucky in my view or you might want to pause and listen to the clients a little bit harder It s been my own history that clients will smile and work around messaging limitations without providing a solitary complaint Even more than trying to address a single feature set I should be thinking about what s around the corner Today I need better IMAP A few years back I listened to Ray Ozzie explain how his teenage children reserved email for those people they didn t want to talk to Real communication was being done by IM and email was passe Doesn t that seem quaint today IM has now merged into every major messaging system Tomorrow we ll have even more complicated messaging systems Here s the three areas I mentioned earlier and how I expect them to move Centralization which is bound to integration This can be on the scale of reading a few mail accounts with a single client using IMAP or POP3 overlapping shared iCal entries or it can be an infrastructure skyscraper like IBM s Unified Communication UC2 with VOIP and a Sametime Public Gateway Vendors are pushing out extensive platforms like Google Gears with Google Voice or Cisco s Unified Commination System UCS They are scrambling to own unified messaging and IMAP is in this mix with SIP and a fistful of other protocols If these massive technologies are insisting on one more unique messaging client interface that excludes everyone else then the consumer orientation of my users will never adopt them Social Networking is here No surprise for the need to a part of it but it needs to be used Facebook Twitter LinkedIn or MySpace Where s the crossover I am always frustrated by jumping back and forth between these Messaging Plantations Lotus Connections is promising but the public side of social networking is already part of messaging behavior even if the architecture of corporate email hasn t caught up Document management Seventy percent or more of my e mail storage is holding attachments This is expensive on two levels 1 our storage is run by a premium SAN vendor which is being used to hold duplicate data that is being copied forwarded and replied back to 2 It is also numbingly inefficient as a work process Corporate email might be the worlds most expensive technology for providing a poor mans document management system Alfresco Sharepoint and Quickr Symphony are beginning to work into document management with messaging and Washington DC Permalink Comments 1 03 21 2009 Why Notes IMAP is Now a Problem Category IBM Lotus nbsp Linux nbsp Ubuntu Have you been to wi fi cafe like Caribou or Starbucks They have become laptop showrooms offering everything from the Dell Mini 9 to upscale Apple Macbook Pros I m tempted to park my cup of java straight no sugar and run EtherApe to trace the connections but it s obvious that most of what is happening in the cafes is what I see on the corporate desktop nbsp e mail On Windows systems there is a lot of Outlook 2003 2007 On the Mac s it s Apple Mail and on the Linux distros it s Thunderbird and Evolution Oh and everyone is using web mail as well for GMail and Yahoo I m not prying but I do fall into a friendly chat session every now and then and I ve learned more about what is happening than I expected Two things are obvious everyone has multiple e mail accounts and they are using IMAP to connect them up into a single client Which is why I m not seeing as many Notes clients as I would expect Notes and IMAP just don t seem to mix well It s not a secret that Notes has been weak on IMAP Ideajam net has a topic to remove IMAP support from the Notes client that has garnered more votes in favor than opposed Apparently there is some frustration that the current IMAP capabilities are not workable and it would be better off if Notes just dropped IMAP in general I m voting the topic down nbsp though as I think it would be a mistake Lotus Notes needs a robust IMAP implementation with a consumer friendly GUI Especially now with the launch of a Ubuntu client IBM is on the edge of pushing out the IBM Open Collaboration Client Solution for Ubuntu They actually have an OCCS ISO for you to take it for a 90 day trial run and they have a PPA repository This is a terrific mail client on Ubuntu but it doesn t do IMAP easily So now there is a problem for IBM Lotus We know that most people have multiple mail accounts and they don t want to shift between them And we know that IMAP is the de facto protocol for general mail usage To add a little spice into the mix the latest Gnome 2 6 will now support Microsoft s MAPI This means that I can take an Outlook 2003 or 2007 PST file from a Windows system and run it on a Linux installation I can use the Linux Evolution mail client with a very simple configuration to become an Exchange client If I were a Lotus Business Partner looking to convert Exchange shops to Domino I d be looking at the Ubuntu OCCS After all it is a disruptive force on any pricing spreadsheet But now that MAPI is integrated into Linux it makes it possible to preserve the back end Exchange installation and simply switch out the client OS No messy mail file conversions Putting a good IMAP interface into the Notes client would go a long way in ensuring an opportunity for OCCS With solid IMAP the Notes client could provide at least a rudimentary connection to an Exchange server and other mail services while also offering Domino Comments 2 03 10 2009 Gmail Gears versus Lotus Notes Encryption Category Administration nbsp Security Is it safe That s the soundbite from the movie thriller Marathon Man and it should be the watchword for how anyone stores their mail Google s Gmail is now being prepped for local distribution soon any Gmail account will be accessible offline as well as online There is a lot of excitement about Google s announcement It s an interesting twist in the development of a messaging platform All the LAN based systems have progressed upwards from a local messaging client into delivering web available content Now we see the processing working its ways downwards from web based mail available from anywhere into a mail client tied to the local workstation Sure we ve had IMAP enabled products like Mozilla s Thunderbird but this is the first time that a web hosted e mail system is creating a local client for off line mail access In all the exuberance though I m not picking up any news about security In fact some of the initial analysis has pointed out the systemic insecurity of how Google Gears is implementing a local mail store How is it possible for these security concerns to be glossed over Has everyone forgotten how easily mail clients can be infected turning the workstation into a spam engine James Gosling the author of the Java language has reportedly described Microsoft Outlook as a petri dish OK as a Lotus enthusiast what do I think about Notes Well since R5 1999 Lotus has offered the ability to encrypt the local databases with the user s id file Like a 1950 s era Sears Catalog with its Good Better and Best values Notes databases can be set to Simple Medium or Strong encryption There isn t a lot of available information how this works or what kind of encyrption is in play so I contacted IBM for some additional details Most of the information is well known but I was able to ferret out a few new pieces Here s an overview of how the ID files are used for encyryption Database encryption begins with appreciating the encryption key which originates in the ID file For a local user it s their personal ID and for a server it s the server ID This means obviously that the ID has to have a sufficiently complex password to make it difficult to compromise It s also the case that we can now have IDs with varying key sizes 630 R5 1 024 ND6 and 2 048 bits ND7 ND8 Using a 2 048 bit key doesn t make the encryption more complex but it does make the encrypting key the ID safer from being compromised Database Encryption Facts The Simple encryption is described by IBM as an encryption permutation that is chosen pseudo randomly using RC4 and is compatible with disk level compression RC4 is used in wi fi standards like WEP and WPA and it s also used in SSL Because I wasn t exactly sure what data or how much is being encrypted under the Simple rubric I ve taken a Domino Directory replica and encrypted it then scrubbed through it for any ASCII strings The Simple encryption leaves no cleartext behind and still allowed the Directory to work correctly If I had to post a Domino server on the web with my corporate Directory in place then I d be looking to enact Simply encryption Medium encryption is still RC4 based and additionally the database is broken into blocks of random size for which the entry point into the virtual stream is reset for each block by RC2 encrypting the block number The Medium encryption setting adds enough latency into disk I O that I wouldn t consider it for the primary databases the directory log or the admin4 nsf Finally in Strong encryption the file is divided into blocks and each is separately encrypted with its own RC4 key nbsp If a partial block is read or written a portion of the RC4 stream must be discarded but the performance of discarding is acceptable nbsp The RC4 keys for the individual blocks are computed by RC2 encrypting the block number Strong encryption is going to require significant better and Stephan called attention to a lot of impressive capabilities including the ability to have a binary export for complete check out and check in necessary in versioning systems Domino s awkward ability to support versioning is one of the criticisms that other programmers level against Notes development Some people are using Subversion or Team Studio for their CVS and I thought of Wissels talk when I read a recent review of Distributed CVS platforms by Robert Fendt Domino 8 5 is almost there in providing full DXL XML export for round trip fidelity It was one of the highest rated feature adds discussed at Lotusphere and listed in Idea Jam by Rocky Oliver A full featured CVS system would just be one benefit of a complete DXL XML model but it would be a tremendous asset to Administration nbsp IBM Lotus Domino ND8 nbsp Linux Working the DAOS Estimator was a bit fussy on my Linux test server DAOS is an important tool for justifying the task of a server upgrade to 8 5 Today I set up it up on a RHEL 5 1 server To make everything perform smoothly I needed to run the following steps Switch to root Chmod the daosest file to be executable Chown the daosest file for root root Move it into the executable directory opt ibm lotus notes xxxx linux Because daosest couldn t see a few key libraries I needed to create three symbolic links into the usr lib directory from the files in the executable directory libxmlproc so libndgts so libnotes so Switch to whatever is the notes account CD into the local notesdata directory Run the opt ibm lotus notes xxxx linux daosest with the synatx for an output file o file txt Works great and now I can switch over to the production servers tomorrow I hope and get some reports It s also fun to run it in the Domino server console
