band that the majority of the world can get behind and in doing so raise up the band as more then a band A band that becomes a cultural beacon of light A band so big so important that everyone takes notice Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson have arguably reached that point but few since then have captured the world Most of the people we 8217 ve interviewed have said that because of the fracturing mainstream market there will never be a band that hits like The Beatles The niches of the world will have their superstars but there wont be one band artist that unites the world under their music I realize there were many reasons The Beatles hit so hard and so big 10 000 hours of practice a new sound changing social mores the death of Kennedy etc But I believe that today there can be an artist that hits the world like The Beatles once did I believe this because I believe in the power of music Never in my life has the time felt so ripe for a new music star Mainstream music has been watered down The mainstream arguably doesn 8217 t even exist because the rising tide of mediocrity has turned so many people away People are looking for something to unite them The advent of social networks only proves this point Everyone wants to feel connected to something and music is one of the greatest connectors because its an intensely personal experience Finally the biggest reason I think an artist could hit like The Beatles once did is because of the internet The internet has that power The power to spread good things so quickly that it boggles the mind The power to create stars out of Trent Reznor released a full length album produced by Timbaland Amongst the more impressive tracks were Everybody 8217 s doing it featuring chris martin jay z AND bono Pussygrinder featuring sheryl crow and Even closer featuring justin timberlake and maynard james keenan You could have bought this impressive album for 18 98 plus a 10 digital delivery convenience fee What a deal Obviously this was an epic April fools joke but the sad truth is that it is very close to what many major labels are doing And with the advent of variable iTunes pricing the labels are once again screwing the fans Squeezing every last drop out of the tiny fraction of people who still choose to pay for music It regularly boggles my mind that in this decade the labels have not found a solution to the piracy problem Paying for music has become a joke as has the record industry Not only because their business model has been decimated but because they have not had the foresight to come together and solve you 8217 re new to a scene or don 8217 t know any other musicians bands in your town here are some tips to get you started Be where the music is To get into a scene start off by attending open stage nights and local shows on a regular basis Talk to other musicians after the show Typically musicians love talking about their own music Show some interest and they ll be interested in you Remember to send an email MySpace Facebook comment after the show to remind them who you are Hang out with other bands Musicians tend to hang out with each other The more people that see your face the more opportunities you have to develop friendships and relationships with like minded people You start going to a lot of local shows you 8217 ll start getting invited to parties jams etc Join your local music industry association Joining your local music industry association can be tremendously helpful In most cases these associations are your link to a larger music world They can provide funding reign as the biggest band ever my spirits were lifted to see The Lost Fingers nominated for a Juno The Lost Fingers are a French Canadian band who have carved out an interesting career They are booked all over the world and have developed a healthy fanbase due to a few spectacular covers and an engaging live show What struck me was the classic way they are creating their career Through paying attention to what their fans want and generally ignoring the mainstream media they have become so big that they cannot be ignored Some may call what The Lost Fingers do a shtick But that doesn 8217 t the dirty old step father of the social network world has been losing audiences worldwide Although MySpace is still doing fairly well in North America in Europe it 8217 s losing the battle Facebook and Bebo are stealing the MySpace audience and everybody 8217 s friend Tom may be leaving too You know things are bad when not even Tom wants to be your friend According to the reports MySpace had 124 million monthly unique visitors last month a decline of 2 Facebook by contrast racked up 276 million unique visitors an increase of 16 6 So what does this mean for artists Well as long as you haven Rockstar Philosophy So I 8217 m at this coffee shop meeting a friend I haven 8217 t seen in awhile I 8217 m there early and end up talking to the girl at the counter whose sister I know This girl is a pretty good looking girl who looks like she 8217 d be into indie rock or something mellow Ask her what music she 8217 s into and she 8217 ll enthusiastically respond 8220 Crust and Grindcore 8221 If you 8217 ve been to a crust grindcore show you 8217 ll notice a lot of scratchy font band patches tight jeans knox inspired hair spiked bracelets machine gun drums indecipherable growls and screams and circle pits I could not picture this girl at one of these shows That got me thinking about how we assume things without really knowing anything It 8217 s like a sales guy who won 8217 t talk to a guy who looks grubby even though the guy might have 5000 to drop on a TV I know the coffee shop grindcore girl example is rare but it 8217 s worth keeping your eyes and mind open to possibilities that may exist outside your frame of reference You may be used to playing bar shows cause you 8217 re all of age and that 8217 s what you 8217 ve always done but maybe the underage kids are the ones who
