release is now up at Turner Classic Movies Emil Jannings as Mephisto in Faust Murnau 8217 s Faust scripted by Carl Mayer and subtitled 8220 A German Folk Saga 8221 reimagines the modern myth of the idealistic scientist who signs a pact with the devil as a holy battle between good and evil with Faust as a kind of modern day Job Mephisto Emil Jannings as a hulking bestial being with massive gargoyle wings and the Archangel Werner Fuetterer looking like a heavenly Seigfried with feathery wings that tower over him debate the goodness of mankind in an abstract celestial setting where shafts of light breath through storm clouds like the dawn coming through the dark night 8220 I 8217 ll wager that I can wrest Faust 8217 s soul from God 8221 he bets the Archangel who accepts confident of mankind 8217 s goodness and apparently unconcerned over the torment the victims are soon to endure Mephisto emerges over a picaresque mountain village a looming monster who hovers over the innocent town like a storm of evil his cloak smothering it in darkness while spreading noxious fumes that carry the plague The image is astounding a vision of darkness and pestilence personified and an image 8216 Little Fugitive 8217 on TCM Morris Engel 8217 s Little Fugitive a model for independent filmmaking from John Cassavetes and Francois Truffaut to the modern American Indie scene shows on Turner Classic Movies in a 8220 Tribute to Morris Engel 8221 this month I wrote an essay and appreciation of the film for the TCM website On location at Coney Island Morris Engel and his collaborator and later wife Ruth Orkin are hardly household names but they are in many ways the proud parents of the American independent scene birthed with their first film the 1953 production Little Fugitive Shot on a minuscule budget with non actors on location largely at Coney Island the film chronicles the adventures of the seven year old Joey who panics after his brother perpetrates a vicious prank making the little boy think he has killed him in a gun accident Joey Richie Andrusco a kid Engel cast right from the streets runs away to Coney Island where he gets lost in the crowds and takes refuge under the boardwalk It 8217 s a more innocent time and there is little if any peril to his predicament no more than the fear of losing his trousers when he abandons them to take a swim When an overtly friendly employee at the pony rides starts to get chummy and then suspicious when he notices Joey keeps showing up without any parents it 8217 s all out of genuine concern for a little boy lost Engel and Orkin are less concerned with story than character and not just Joey Little Fugitive takes place in a palpably real world the concrete neighborhood of Joey 8217 s home has a life and character unique to it and Engel takes the camera into the crowds of Coney Island and through the weekend beachgoers off the boardwalk to capture the real life rhythms of New Yorkers and the atmosphere and energy of Coney Island in the summer Some of the picture perfect situations border on precious and the film runs largely on charm but Engel 8217 s eye for people and landscape and social activity gives it a vibrancy that is still compelling Much of the richness comes from the accumulation of real and realistic details from the location shooting the script rooted more in character than plot and the easy naturalistic performances from casts of non professionals The black and white photography is not gritty but does lend an authenticity to the production A professional photojournalist a former combat photographer and a lifelong street photographer Engels brings a sensitivity to his images and compositions While one tempted to dismiss Richie Andrusco s excellent central performance as lucky casting he is always unselfconscious and not at all cloying you have to wonder if Engel 8217 s work with models is responsible for a different perspective to directing actors Read my complete feature here The Brennan Jesse Eisenberg spends a summer trying to save money for graduate school It 8217 s the real world adventures of life in the space between college and independence that place where you think that you 8217 re an adult but have yet to live outside of the bubble Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart Greg Mottola 8217 s semi autobiographical coming of age comedy is as smart and perceptive as they come It could be Superbad four years later where the smart kid has embraced college and left his high school world and identity far behind College grad James reads poetry for pleasure has been accepted to post grad journalism school at Columbia and plans a summer bopping around Europe with his college buddies Until his parents break the bad news Dad has been demoted this is the pre downsizing generation and the once upper middle class lifestyle loses a prefix The European summer romp becomes a working vacation and he 8217 s pulled back into the working class environs that he thought he left behind If he 8217 d given it any thought at all that is James hasn 8217 t been all that aware of class and it 8217 s clear that he got through college without a part time job or work study He 8217 s unqualified for any job but Adventureland a rickety park just a few notches above a county fair midway and he 8217 s sized up immediately by the park manager Bill Hader behind a its 8220 British New Wave 8221 progam I wrote an overview of the film for TCM com Tom Courtenay and Julie Christie swap lies The comic story of an imaginative young man who escapes his dull home life numbing job and dreary industrial town through wild fantasies and fabrications John Schlesinger 8217 s Billy Liar 1963 is often described as a British version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty 1947 You can trace the roots back to James Thurber 8217 s original story but it 8217 s nothing like the Danny Kaye movie of the meek dreamer turned courageous hero Set in 8220 the provinces 8221 of the industrial north of England in the early sixties it explores the same fears and frustrations that roil through Look Back in Anger 1958 The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner 1962 This Sporting Life 1963 and other films of the early British New Wave of 8220 angry young man 8221 films The difference is perspective this portrait of ambition aching to break out of suffocating conformity and social expectation is viewed through the prism of fantasy and puckish humor and accomplished with a sprightly style and a succession of zany asides that like Billy 8217 s fantasies pinballs through the conventional world around it 8230 Billy Liar was Schlesinger 8217 s second feature and it reunited the creative team of his directorial debut the well received drama A Kind of Loving 1962 producer Joseph Janni and screenwriters Willis Hall and Keith Waterhouse who adapted their own hit play based on the novel by Waterhouse For all the fantasy and comedy however it shares the working class milieu and the smothering social atmosphere of his first film 8220 When I first read the novel I realized that it was about 8230 this boy 8217 s need for a healthy fantasy life to get him through the difficulties he found with his family and his surroundings in the life he was leading 8221 Schlesinger shot Billy Liar largely on location in the Northern England town of Yorkshire and establishes an remasters a pair of Wong Kar wai 8217 s films from the 1990s for new special editions Fallen Angels 1995 made in the wake of his breakthrough film Chungking Express carves out and expands on a splinter story originally written for that film Two stories of disconnected individuals cross paths a hit man Leon Lai loved the woman Michele Reis who arranges his contracts but never meets him though she does clean his apartment and a mute ex con Takeshi Kaneshiro who breaks into businesses at night to play at running them who meets a volatile girl Charlie Yeung Wong punctuates his rather melancholy narrative with odd humor and unexpected explosions of shocking violence all shot in Doyle s sensuous oversaturated colors Wong Kar wai s most emotionally volatile drama Happy Together 1997 brings an edgier dimension to his work Hong Kong heartthrobs Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung take a chance playing angry ecstatic frustrated vindictive in fact everything but happy together lovers who travel to Buenos Aires and find themselves stuck in the strange land Rarely has a director so convincingly explored a love hate relationship Shot in grainy high contrast black and white that transforms into delirious dream colors the film achieves an extravagant overwrought emotional quality more real than real Wong Kar wai 39 s nocturnal world of quot Fallen Angels quot Fallen Angels features a new interview with director of photography Christopher Doyle and three featurettes and Happy Together includes the new Q amp A featurette Wong Kar wai at the Museum of the Moving Image in addition to the previously released documentary Buenos Aires Zero Degrees Both are mastered from fresh HD film transfers and look quite beautiful which leads me to the obvious question when will Kino enter the Blu ray market Criterion releases Roberto Rossellini 8217 s 1959 drama Il Generale Della Rovere starring Vittoria De Sica as an Italian con man in World War II who profited in the margin between desperate Italian families and the German Gestapo who essentially policed the country It 8217 s a richly drawn drama of an opportunist whose conscience is reignited when opportunism becomes collaboration and De Sica 8217 s performance is a model of understatement and ambiguity I knew that De Sica had been a matinee idol before the war but only because it was part of the written history And I knew that he continued to act in front of the cameras even after making his name as a director with Shoe shine and Bicycle Thieves and maintaining a very busy career behind the camera right up to his death in 1974 the IMDb lists over 100 screen appearances since 1945 many of them in very quite frivolous productions It 8217 s only recently that I started to notice just how good he is notably in reviewing the DVD of Max Ophuls 8217 Earrings of Madame De and my debut viewing of Della Rovere He is full of confidence and charm understated in his playing ambiguous in his intentions His sense of aristocratic presence is unforced assumed rather than stated and in Della Rovere he slips into his con artist rap so smoothly that it takes a few scenes to realize that pretty much everything coming out of his mouth is a line of bullshit most of it apparently ad libbed for the situation De Sica makes it feel at once sincere and utterly false and gives it the spontaneity of an impetuous Parallax View Silent Light dir Carlos Reygadas The screen opens on the night sky the stars glowing not twinkling mind you but crisp and sharp and dense as seen from the clarity of a desert with no city lights or urban pollution to muddy the view The sounds of night are the only soundtrack hyper attentive to the natural world of insects The starfield suddenly starts to bend and warp as the screen spirals and the camera readjusts It 8217 s only when the orange and green of dawn begins to overpower the black sky and drown out the stars and dark shadows of silhouettes are slowly revealed that we realize it is the horizon It 8217 s like watching the world being born in front of our eyes with the sounds of farm animals waking to the dawn and the Earth rousing from slumber taking over the soundtrack The camera silently tracks in to the scene creeping so slowly it 8217 s almost imperceptible but for the shifting perspective Mennonites in Mexico I can 8217 t recall ever seeing such a vision of dawn as the birth of a new day of the turning of the Earth as a literal rebirth of life in a film let alone in the defining first images Silent Light Carlos Reygadas 8217 third feature is set in a Mennonite community in Mexico an insular pocket of agrarian people that feels almost like a portal to old Europe within modern Mexico This is not some Luddite culture Johan Cornelio Wall the gentle patriarch of the farm family we meet over silent prayer and bustling breakfast drives a sturdy new pickup and harvests the fields with combines and he joins his children to watch a DVD in a portable TV in a van but these people hold close to their values their religion and their way of life Reygadas 8217 measured pace and the reflective observation of his patient camera is in tune with the movement of seasons and the cycle of crops rather than the rush of urban life carved up into deadlines It 8217 s also in tune with the austerity of their surroundings and the quality of their spiritual lives They are not a simple people which sounds more like an insult than a description but a community of people who seem to take the time to experience every moment whether it is silent 8217 s The Parallax View the defining conspiracy film of the seventies plays on Turner Classic Movies this weekend I wrote on the film for the TCM website Warren Beatty stars as investigative reporter Joe Frady though when we first glimpse him in the film he 8217 s merely a face in the crowd around Senator Charles Carroll William Joyce He tries to bluff his way into an exclusive gathering for the Senator at the top of the Space Needle in Seattle but is rebuffed and thus on the ground when the Senator is shot and the gunman killed in an escape attempt 8220 There is no evidence of a conspiracy 8221 concludes a panel of judges who proclaim it the work of a lone gunman We of course know there was at least one accomplice who slipped to safety It 8217 s the film 8217 s answer to the Warren Commission and Pakula shoots the tribunal floating in a sea of shadow a tiny image that slowly ominously grows larger as the credits roll By the end of the sequence they fill the screen with an image as distorted as their conclusions Warren Beatty gets a different perspective The film based on a novel by Loren Singer is most assuredly of its time Pakula described the film as 8220 sort of an American myth based on some things that have happened some fantasies we may have had of what might have happened and a lot of fears a lot of us have had 8221 The story comes right out of the suspicion with which many Americans viewed the Warren Commission investigation of the assassination of John F Kennedy and the growing cottage industry of conspiracy theories of organized plots and high level cover ups The atmosphere of suspicion and corruption could be Pakula 8217 s response to the growing public distrust of government brought to a head by the revelations of criminal misconduct by the chemist who is not using his powers for good I often say that he 8217 s cooking crystal meth because that 8217 s the only way he knows how he can make money If he was a mathematician instead of a than 80 films in every genre over the course of four decades but for my money he was never more interesting than in the early sound era where his energy and audacity powered over a dozen short sharp street smart films filled with saucy sexiness and startling violence and mixed with varying measures of social commentary Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume Three collects six features by the enormously prolific director from that era and two documentaries on a four disc set and they are something else films strewn with wild melodrama romantic triangles brawny action and some of the sexiest scenes of heavy petting and passionate smooching you ve seen out of old Hollywood with more frank sexuality more suggested than shown but there is no mistaking the suggestions I cover all six films with special attention paid to the two mad masterpieces of depression era outrage and helplessness Heroes for Sale and Wild Boys of the Road both 1933 in my review on Parallax View The intense and thoroughly riveting In Treatment a series developed for HBO by Rodrigo Garcia who directed half the series himself is presented in an unconventional format five half hour episodes a week over the course of nine weeks Each feature psychiatrist Paul Gabriel Byrne in a weekly session with his patients and at the end of the week with his own therapist Dianne Wiest with whom he has an adversarial relationship Which isn 8217 t all that different from many of his own patients Laura Melissa George is in love with Paul and spends her sessions trying to rouse an emotion from him Alex Blair Underwood is a hyper competitive Navy pilot who treats his session like verbal sparring matches Sophie Mia Wasikowska is a teenage gymnast with deep emotional conflicts and Amy and Jake Embeth Davidtz Josh Charles are married couple who can turn ferocious in the middle of a session The show was adapted from the Israeli series Be 8217 Tipul and many of the American scripts are based on episodes written by Ari Folman the writer director of the Oscar nominated film Waltz With Bashir Garcia is a cinematic short story craftsman and this series like his films is adept at exploring uncomfortable
